A lesson that Scout teaches in To Kill A Mocking Bird is that you have to stay young at heart. Through the whole book, the children are growing up. Over the course of years that the book takes place in the children's lives are the years that people mature the most. One part that really sticks out to me is when the all the people riot against Atticus when they find out that he is going to be defending Tom Robinson in the trial, and Scoutt acts like a kid and they all back off, because they all remember being a kid.
Atticus teaches his family that one cannot prejudge people. Scout and Jem learn to not fear and hate Mrs. Dubose, when Atticus forces Jem to read to her.Their assumption that she was a mean old lady does not let them see why, until she passed and Atticus explains that she was fighting a drug addiction and was constantly in pain.
" She was sick for a long time. Son, didn't you know what her fits were?" Jem shook his head. pg. 111 This is a quote from Atticus as he begins to explain why Mrs. Dubose was the way she was and that she didn't really meen the things she said to the kids
